Do New Yorkers Do More Than Drink and Eat?

The holidays were tough this year. When my partner Kevin's mom died two days after Thanksgiving, we pretty much reacted by going on a carte blanche eating and drinking spree. All the way through the end of 2006. To add to what my mom said about her own weight gain while my dad has been battling colon cancer, we knew that all the food and liquor in the world wasn't going to fix it, but we were going to give it a shot.

The day after my second 29th birthday, a hard rain fell, and now we've been dieting and detoxing. Unlike previous bouts of sobriety, we're avoiding bars this time, so we don't tempt ourselves. Unfortunately, most of my winter social interaction - outside of work - takes place in bars, so it's crimping my social life. Severely. I mean, we've been going to see movies, but you can't exactly catch up on someone else's life while watching Notes on a Scandal. And my fall back position, dinner out with friends, seems less appealing when I'm trying to lose 20 pounds before the summer.

All of which is to say: I've had three days off for MLK weekend and I've never been so bored in my entire life. What do healthy, teetotaling New Yorkers do for fun? In L.A. and Tucson I just would've rounded up my friends for a hike, and in the summer I'd get a bunch of people to go somewhere (Central Park, Coney Island, etc.) but I just have no idea what social stuff there is to do in NYC in the middle of the winter that doesn't involve eating or drinking. Suggestions anyone?
